Welcome to the Restoration Player City Spotlight where our Retired Community Programs Senator Nuri sits down to talk with the mayor of one of our awesome player cities giving you, our dear readers, the opportunity to learn more about one of the server's great player cities.
In this episode we enter the shadowy side with a visit to Pelgo Slums, Tatooine. Described as the seedier twin to Mos Pelgo, Pelgo Slums hides in the shadows of the Palace of the Almighty Jabba the Hutt. Today we sit down with Oogie to learn more about one of Tatooine's most notorious player cities.
Oogie, tell us a little bit about Pelgo Slums and how it came to be and any other interesting stories.
Once a quiet and unremarkable town on the desert planet of Tatooine, Mos Pelgo had become a hotbed of activity in recent years. Its population had grown to a boiling point, overflowing with merchants, smugglers, mercenaries, and spice runners. The town had become a hub for bounty hunters, and murders in the main street had become a common sight. Mos Pelgo had long been a covert refuge for the notorious Tempest Trading Company, which often engaged in illicit activities. Yet, the surge in criminal activities within the town had reached a tipping point, impeding the smooth running of business.
The increased activity had not gone unnoticed by the powers that be and the regional governor of the Tatooine system had taken notice. Even the Notorious Jabba the Hutt had taken issue with the prominence of the city, declaring in a private meeting with the City’s mayor, Marshall Solowest, that all the new attention was bad for business and the relationship between the Hutts and Mos Pelgo might suffer as a result. The meeting was tense and both the Black Sand Mercenaries and Jabba’s henchmen seemed ready to draw blasters at a moment’s notice.
In an effort to calm tensions the mayor ordered the Black Sand Mercenaries to raid a few structures in the seediest part of town, hoping to put a dent in the growing unsanctioned criminal activity. The raids were mostly successful, but they had unintended consequences. Many of the displaced criminals had started to form a small neighborhood just outside of Mos Pelgo in the shadow of Jabba’s Palace, seeking shelter from the raids that had plagued their operations in Pelgo. The locals began to call it the "Pelgo Slums," a playful yet fitting name for the ramshackle settlement.
The first mayor, Ruple, built up this squalid encampment into a sprawling city. Over time the city grew, but the Mayor's activities at Jabba's was attracting more and more attention. Not long ago Jabba ordered Ruple to come to the palace and explain a warehouse that was missing all its cargo. Well, no one knows where in the Outer Rim Ruple disappeared to, but we do get encrypted messages from him from time to time. Since then a new Mayor was appointed (me). It remains to be seen if I will keep the job or become food for the Sarlacc.
How old is Pelgo Slums?
No one really knows the age of the Slums. Seems there have always been some folks who wish to be close to the Great Jabba's Palace.
Choosing a city specialization is often a difficult choice. What did you choose and why?
We are an Improved Job Market since we have so many Bounty Hunters and others using the city for various needs.
Have you hosted any events in your city? If so, tell us about them
We don't discuss "events" that take place in the Slums. What happens here stays here (and is often turned into food).
Any unique locations in your city that make it special? How about any famous residents?
Well, this is the Slums, so we are not like those pretty boy cities. We don't need no med center and such. Why, our street surgeons will fix ya right up with a nice drop of Booster Brown, and you are right as rain. As for famous (or infamous) residents, well, we don't talk about such in the Slums. But I can tell you that since his palace overlaps into our city limits, Jabba is our most famous resident, and his starport is very handy to have right here.
We are a glorious gritty chaotic mess with no streets but alleyways everywhere, and we wouldn't have it any other way.
Fair enough. Seems fitting. Thanks for sitting down with us, Oogie.
Be sure and check out Pelgo Slums the next time you find yourself baking in the twin suns of Tatooine and feel the need for a little shade.
